For years I have intermittent fasted on Monday’s. I view it as the chance to kick off my week lighter, and more focused. However, recently I have taken this fasting experience even deeper as I explore Mindy’s Pelz’s Fast Like a Girl routine to align fasting with hormone cycling. So far it has been an incredible experience, and I will write more soon, when I have experienced the practice longer.

In the meantime, I wanted to share my favorite way to kick off a fasting morning. As I do not drink coffee, and prefer to follow a non-dairy diet, I have tried and tested various methods to make a latte that is healthy, will not break my fast, but also tastes great. This detox tea works for both intermittent fasting (something shorter like a 16:8) or I have used it for as long as a 36h fast.

For starters, fasting or no fasting, I ALWYAS start my morning with a LMNT salt pack. I mix one pack in 16oz of water, drink and then follow with another 16oz. You want to start your day hydrated, and this is my top top to reset your body from sleeping and start at zero. I also use the LMNT pack when I need a pick-me-up during my fasting window.

For my morning tea I try to be mindful of liquids that will not break my fast which is why I have been experimenting, and love, my detox tea. This is a take on the Bulletproof method of caffeine + a fat to create a morning late (which is way more fun to sip than plain tea).

Traditional bulletproof coffee is made with coffee, ghee (clarified butter) and MCT oil. The premise is that the combination of caffeine + fat will promote a ketogenic state that keeps you feeling full, provides steady energy levels, and supports a fasting state. I’ve tried and tested my version of this detox tea for the past month and it tastes delicious, has been a nice substitute to my morning chai latte, and has not kicked me out of ketogenesis. For the recipe read on:

Vegan Bulletproof Tea

I am a fan of anything chocolate and mint, so I use this Dark Chocolate Peppermint tea for my caffeine. In lieu of ghee, I have found that cacao butter is a great supplement. Cacao butter is a high-antioxidant food, that is high in polyphenols which decrease inflammation in your body. They also provide a great smoothy creamy texture when blended. For the MCT oil, I love to use unrefined coconut oil.

AWH Recipe

  1. Brew tea (I use this tea and brew in 200 degree water for 5 minutes)
  2. Add 2-3 cacao butter wafers
  3. 1-2 tsp of coconut oil

Blend the above ingredients in a Vitamix or high-speed blender to create a frothy latte that tastes delicious!

Option: Sprinkle some cinnamon on top for extra taste and microbiome support/diversity. A small amount will add flavor without taking you out of ketogenesis.

I have found the above recipe and combination works great for my body. I could fast all day on this beverage without feeling a drop in my blood sugar. A traditional “bulletproof” coffee has more oil, and caffeine, but I have found what works for my needs, and encourage you to experiment to find what is the perfect combination for you.

For example, if you find that you are hungry before your fasting window is up then you can increase up to 1 TB of coconut oil and add up to 5 cacao butter wafers.

Of note, if you want to ensure that you are staying in a ketogenic state (for your body) then I recommend using a blood glucose monitor. The recipe above should not throw you out of ketogenesis, however increasing the quantities might … and to be safe, just test your sugar.

Happy sipping!
